The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists 10 top leading causes of death for African Americans, which is highly recommended for all African Americans view, at least once, every six months. 8 out of the 10 causes of death were due to health related issues with heart disease listed as #1. Known for its high crime rate; East Oakland’s violence, prostitution and drug activity are additional causes that increase the African American death rate. Homicide is listed as the 8th leading cause.
Many of us have seen the commercials about the dangers of diabetes (#4 leading cause), stroke (#3 leading cause), and cancer (#2 leading cause) in the African American community, instructing watchers to call their doctor for more information. The preventative action process is immediately halted due to the lack of a primary care physician, and/or the lack of sufficient health insurance to cover such care, so where can we go that specializes in our specific risk factors?
